DESCRIPTION:Want to contribute to marine conservation\, but don’t know where to start? Take part in a scavenger hunt for science! Starting on Worldwide Marine Protected Areas Day on August 1st\, we invite you to participate in a BioBlitz across Oregon’s five marine reserves and marine protected areas. From the rugged cliffs of Cape Falcon in the north to the dramatic islands of Redfish Rocks in the south\, Oregon’s five marine reserves are areas dedicated to conservation and scientific research. These “no-take” zones serve as vital sanctuaries for marine life and you are invited to explore and document the creatures that call these special places home using your phone’s camera. No scientific experience is required\, just a smart phone\, the iNaturalist app\, curiosity\, and a willingness to explore!  \nJoin the BioBlitz on iNaturalist here\, visit Oregon’s marine reserves or adjacent marine protected areas\, upload pictures of the organisms you see! Remember to practice good tidepool etiquette and ocean safety.

SUMMARY:Guided Tidepool Tour at Battle Rock Beach
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Marine Protected Areas Day on August 1st with a guided tidepool tour at Battle Rock Beach led by ODFW and Faith Townsend of Reef Check! The event will be held on Saturday\, August 1st from 7 am – 9 am. We will meet outside the Battle Rock Wayside Park Visitor’s Center (520 Jefferson Street\, Port Orford\, OR 97465) before taking a 15 minute walk down Battle Rock Beach to large rock stacks that are full of fascinating critters during low tides! Please bring footwear that you can get wet and sandy. We recommend downloading the iNaturalist app and joining the BioBlitz: Oregon’s Marine Reserves and MPAs project to document what you find and contribute to coastal science!  \nRegistration is requested\, but not required. SUMMARY:Tabling at Redfish Music Festival
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Marine Protected Areas Day by enjoying classical music with a view of the Redfish Rocks Marine Reserve! The ODFW Marine Reserves team will provide some opening remarks at the Redfish Music Festival’s August 1st performance (more details available here). We will also be tabling with resources and information about Oregon’s marine reserves. \nAbout the Redfish Music Festival \nFounded in 2021\, the Redfish Music Festival is named after the Redfish Rocks Marine Reserve located off the south Oregon coast between Rocky Point and Coal Point\, just south of the town of Port Orford. This site is Oregon’s only marine reserve located south of Cape Blanco. Cape Blanco is a known biogeographic break — where the north-south extent of some species begin or end — within the California Current System. The Redfish Rocks Reserve is a one-of-a-kind\, and that describes our music festival very well. It is precious and worth protecting and preserving.
